Learn how to develop a Tanuki Bonsai.

a Tanuki bonsai (also known as a phoenix graft) is the ultimate project.

It is essentially a brilliant architectural illusion: you take a beautiful, intricate piece of deadwood (taniko) and graft a young, living sapling (usually a juniper) into a carved channel running up the spine of the wood. Over time, the living tree grows, thickens, and presses tightly into the groove, making it look like a single, ancient tree that has survived centuries of harsh mountain weather.

The name Tanuki comes from the mythical Japanese trickster shape-shifter (the raccoon dog), because the tree is pulling off a magnificent, artistic trick.
